5 Painting Mistakes People Make During Winter

Most winter paint failures come down to the same handful of avoidable errors. Here are the five we see most often in London properties, and how to sidestep each one.

Mistakes One and Two

Rushing the Recoat and Painting Cold Walls

The most common winter error is recoating too soon. The surface feels dry, the second coat goes on, and the layer beneath is still soft — leaving patchy sheen, roller marks and paint that peels away with masking tape.

The second is painting a wall that is simply too cold. Below roughly 10°C most emulsions won't form a proper film, and the finish looks flat and streaky no matter how good the paint was.

Both are solved the same way: low background heating for a few days beforehand, and honest drying time between coats.

Mistakes Three and Four

Sealing the Room Shut and Painting Over Mould

Closing every window to keep the heat in traps the moisture that paint needs to release. Drying stalls, condensation forms on the fresh coat and the room ends up smelling damp for weeks.

The fourth mistake is cosmetic thinking: painting straight over black spotting or a damp patch. Mould grows back through new paint within weeks unless it's killed with a fungicidal wash and the cause addressed.

Ventilate in short, deliberate bursts, keep internal doors open, and treat problems at source before any primer goes on.

Painting Outside in the Wrong Weather

Interior painting works all year. Exterior masonry and joinery genuinely don't — damp surfaces, frost risk and short daylight hours make winter exterior work a false economy.

Applying masonry paint to a wall that hasn't fully dried, or letting a fresh coat catch an overnight frost, causes flaking and blistering that has to be stripped and redone.

The sensible approach is to use winter for interiors and empty property work, and hold exterior projects for milder, drier conditions in spring.
