How to Make a Dark Winter Room Look Brighter With Paint

Paint can't create daylight, but it can make the most of what little a London room gets. Here's how to choose and apply colour so a dark room feels genuinely brighter.

Start With Light

Understand How Little Daylight the Room Actually Gets

A dark London room is usually dark for a structural reason — a north-facing aspect, a light well, a neighbouring building or a deep bay that swallows what daylight there is.

That matters because paint doesn't create light, it reflects it. The job of colour in a dark room is to bounce the small amount of daylight available as efficiently as possible.

Watch the room across a full day before choosing. A shade that looks crisp at midday can turn grey and cold by three o'clock in January.

Choose the Right White

Warm Off-Whites Beat Brilliant White Every Time

Brilliant white feels like the obvious answer and is usually the wrong one. In low light it reads cold and slightly blue, which makes a dark room feel bleaker rather than brighter.

Warm off-whites with a soft yellow, cream or gentle pink undertone hold their warmth in weak winter daylight and under artificial light in the evening.

Look for a high light reflectance value in a warm tone — that combination gives you maximum bounce without the clinical edge.

Paint the Ceiling, Woodwork and Corners to Match

Continuing the wall colour — or a very close lighter tone — onto the ceiling removes the shadow line that visually caps a dark room and makes it feel taller.

Painting woodwork, skirtings and window reveals in the same family as the walls stops hard contrast breaking the room into small, dark segments. Reveals in particular should be as light as possible to maximise the daylight coming in.

Finish matters too: a matt or soft sheen on walls avoids glare, while a subtle sheen on woodwork picks up and reflects whatever light the room has.
